An Unexpected Guest
Jane Shewmaker Hale
When a couple realizes a new addition to their family is causing a problem, they know love is the only answer.
âYou and James have a guest room at your home?â That was the last thing Tandy Winters expected Doctor Michaels to ask.
She looked up from the list of errands sheâd been reviewing as she waited in the examination room for the confirmation of a slight case of the flu. Tandy knew she was wasting her time at the doctorâs office, but her husband James was getting tired of her sniffling, headaches, and upset stomach.
Typical James style, heâd teased, âValentineâs Day is next week and Iâve made reservations for dinner at Nakottaâs so I can celebrate with my two sweethearts. I donât want one of them to be sneezing and blowing her nose at the dinner table.â
Mmm! Nakottaâs! Our favorite steak house.
âHey, two sweethearts? Have you got another woman?â Tandy demanded. âIs there a something youâve been meaning to tell me?â Hands on hips, Tandy whirled on James, assuming the role of an outraged wife. âLet me guess, youâre waiting to spring it on me on Valentineâs Day at Nakottaâs? What a heartless brute you are!â
Tandy threw a halfhearted slap in James direction before grabbing for a Kleenex.
Ker-choo!
James backed away from the contamination zone. âHoney, you know Iâm talking about Cody. You havenât been yourself lately. Surely you haven t forgotten our daughterâs eleventh birthday is next week. We can make it a double celebration. Steak, ale, and two beautiful women. What more could a man ask?â
James was right. Their life was perfect. What more could they ask for? Maybe she hadnât been herself lately. But blame that on the flu. Or, maybe it wasnât the flu after all.
Tandy felt the first stab of fear. What if there was something seriously wrong with her? What if she were dying? Was that why Doctor Michaels had run some extra tests? OMG! If she died she wouldnât be there to help James raise Cody. Sheâd not live to see Cody graduate or help pick out her wedding dress or see her grandchildren.
Kerchoo!
Tandy blew her nose. She wiped tears from her eyes that werenât from the blasted flu, either.
Doctor Michaels cleared his throat. âWell, Tandy, do you?â
Tandyâs mind was blank. Did she what? OMG! She was losing her memory. This must be one of the symptoms of the fatal illness that Doctor Michaels was going to tell her she had. âIâm sorry, Doctor Michaels. Could you repeat the question?â
âTandy, I was teasing you. I asked if you and James had a guest room at your home.â Doctor Michaels chuckled.
âDoes that mean I need a live-in nurse to take care of me? How long do I have, Doctor Michaels? Be honest with me.
